“The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different.”
– Hippocrates
Welcome Small Pet lovers! Whether you’re into fish, frogs, lizards, turtles, guinea pigs, canaries, parrots, gerbils, mice rats, hermit crabs, snakes or tarantulas, here we’ll be sharing the latest information about small pet care, their emotional lives, biology and their place in the natural world outside of our homes.
“Did you know that rats laugh? And, that they love to be tickled even more than being petted? They actually giggle with glee. These chirps are on a higher frequency (50 kilohertz) above human hearing (2 to 4 kilohertz), so we can’t hear it, but it’s been well recorded for decades. Rats’ love of tickling and laughter has everything to do with their love of joyful, social play. They’re smart and play pranks on each other, too.” – RA Conroy
Like Ms. Conroy, we here at the The Pet CARE Pro are forever students. Hence this gazette. We’re here to learn too, right along with you.
First, we need to set aside centuries of old dogma about animals.
The exponential changes over the decades in the fields of veterinary medicine, behavioral sciences, training techniques and nutrition can sometimes seem confusing, contradictory and by sheer volume, overwhelming to anyone, including the experts.
Yet at the same time, along with warp drive advances in research, technology and sharing via the internet have come monumental leaps in knowledge, especially with the revolutionary discoveries in cognitive ethology, Theory of Mind and sentience in animals.
It’s a breathtaking, exciting time. We are standing at the crossroads of major sociological, evolutionary change, a paradigm shift of the highest order: one of the mind.
So, let’s hop down to the next bend with Peter Cottontail and explore what’s new on the horizon…and by the way, your hermit crab has a very good memory, and can recognize both friend and foe in humans!
The PET CARE PRO recommends:
- Animal Wise by Virginia Morell. The NY Times bestselling book of mind-blowing discoveries.
- The Emotional Lives of Animals by Marc Bekoff. Another bestseller and important book of revelations about animals.
Until next time:
